Addressing a two-day meeting of the Association in Abuja, Othman lamented the significant impact of insecurity on NARTO members, describing the transportation business in Nigeria as one of the most challenging in the last four years. He highlighted the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on transportation businesses, leading to a disruption in the value chain.
Othman pointed out that despite the Federal Government’s tax credit mitigation measure of N631 million, challenges such as insecurity and poor road conditions persisted, making seamless movement of people, goods, and services difficult. He emphasized the plight of drivers who faced threats from bandits and kidnappers, resulting in numerous cases of kidnappings and truck hijackings along critical routes in the country.
The NARTO President called for a review of security policies by the Federal Government, acknowledging the efforts of security agencies but urging further action to address the persistent challenges faced by the transport industry.
Regarding the challenges posed by the removal of fuel subsidy announced by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, Othman commended the deregulation of the petroleum downstream sector but highlighted substantial challenges arising from demand and supply dynamics for marketers and transporters.
Dapo Segun, the Executive Vice President of the Petroleum Downstream Sector, represented the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. Segun praised NARTO for their cooperation during challenging times and encouraged them to persevere, acknowledging that tough times are temporary but resilient associations like NARTO endure.
