Confirming the arrests, CSP Shola Jejeloye, the chairman of the taskforce, revealed that these individuals were identified for their audacious tactics, forcing truck drivers to part with money under the guise of working for the now-defunct Lagos State Parks and Garages Agency. Jejeloye highlighted that the gang, operating with impunity, subjected many drivers to physical harm and acts of brutality when they resisted extortion attempts.

“We have been tracking this gang for a while after receiving numerous complaints from road users along this corridor. There have been instances of drivers facing violent threats, including the removal of essential truck components such as batteries and mirrors right on the expressway when they refused to comply,” stated Jejeloye.

Expressing dismay at the miscreants wreaking havoc on the highways in the name of Parks and Garages despite the ban on the agency’s activities last year, Jejeloye emphasized, “The audacity to perform these acts is quite baffling. They threaten their victims during both day and night, showing no regard for existing law and order in the state. Unfortunately, we have come to put an end to this jungle justice, and they will no longer be allowed to operate anywhere in the state.”

A victim, Victor Aiyegbosi, a truck driver with a transport company, described the gang as inhumane, revealing that they damaged trucks by ripping off cables and shattering windows and mirrors just to get their way. He expressed gratitude for the Taskforce’s intervention, stating, “The Taskforce assisting us here is the best thing that has happened to us this year so far.”

Jejeloye disclosed that the 51 apprehended suspects have been charged to court, where eight of them pleaded guilty and were sentenced to seven months imprisonment with an option of a 65,000 Naira fine. The remaining 43 pleaded not guilty, and their hearing was adjourned until the 1st of March 2024. CSP Jejeloye issued a stern warning to others engaged in acts of impersonation and extortion, urging them to desist immediately or risk prosecution. The Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation networks within the state, aligning with the THEMES PLUS agenda of the present administration.
