Adebutu was accused of inducing voters during the governorship election held on March 18, 2023, in collaboration with other members of his party, as reported by security agents. The allegations suggested that he instructed his bank to issue 200,000 preloaded ATM Verve cards with N10,000 each, which were distributed across the state on the election day with the purported aim of influencing voters.
Although initially charged by the police, Adebutu had reportedly traveled abroad for medical treatment and returned in December 2023. In his first physical appearance before the court, Adebutu pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
During the proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs SAN, orally withdrew the previous information and substituted it with an amended version, a move not objected to by the lead counsel for the defendants, Gordy Uche SAN.
Uche requested the court to allow the defendants to maintain their bail terms, and specifically sought self-recognition bail for Adebutu, emphasizing that he willingly appeared in court. However, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs SAN, did not object to bail but disagreed with the self-recognition clause.
Justice Abiodun Akinyemi granted bail to Adebutu in the sum of N1 million, with a surety in like sum, who could be a family member or bondsman. The case was adjourned until Wednesday, February 7, 2024, for further hearings.
