The Portuguese coach, acknowledging his preference for watching the African tournament over European football, emphasized the need for Europe to adopt Africa’s integrity in officiating, particularly with the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.
Mourinho highlighted that VAR decisions in the AFCON are impartial and not swayed to favor wealthy or renowned teams, suggesting that the headquarters of VAR should be located in Africa.
“I find myself watching AFCON more than European football. They are setting an example of honesty for us. In AFCON, VAR is implemented exactly as it should be,” Mourinho remarked according to CFC News Report.
“They don’t manipulate it to assist the big-money or famous teams. That’s why every team gives their best. They recognize that VAR isn’t selectively deployed but is equitable for all. Even players have a voice if the referee overlooks an incident. In Europe, if I or a player implore the referee to review something, it’s met with a red card. VAR’s headquarters ought to be within CAF.”
