Mourinho had expressed his support for his compatriot and the Super Eagles to emerge victorious in the 2023 AFCON while speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s ‘FIVE’ podcast.
“My best friend in football is in the final (AFCON). The Nigerian coach is my best friend. He grew up with me, we studied together. We went to University on the same day, we spent five years together,” Mourinho had stated.
When questioned about Mourinho’s statement, Peseiro informed reporters before the commencement of the AFCON final: “Certainly, I have spoken with him on numerous occasions.
“He is my friend, and he is a football genius. I am delighted that he is backing me.
“He remains my friend, and it’s a positive for us.”
