Gbajabiamila made this announcement during a meeting with a delegation from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by its President, Lucky Emonefe, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He affirmed that final preparations were underway to ensure a smooth launch and implementation of the policy. Furthermore, he encouraged students to advocate for and counter criticisms against the Student Loan, stressing that the initiative aims to ensure that every student, irrespective of their background, has access to quality education.
Gbajabiamila remarked, “Mr. President is committed to seeing it through and seeing it through successfully. It was initially slated for launch in January, but anything worth doing is worth doing well.
“We are hopeful that it will be launched in the next two to three weeks. We are ensuring that all necessary arrangements are in place before the launch to ensure that our policies are impeccable.”
The President’s Chief of Staff emphasized that the successful implementation of the student loan program would be among the achievements of the current administration.
He appealed to Nigerians to lend their support to ensure that no deserving student in need of the loan is left behind.
Gbajabiamila underscored the importance of public support for the success of the policy, acknowledging some opposing views. He emphasized that the policy is aimed at ensuring equal access to education for all Nigerian students, countering any discriminatory practices based on birth circumstances.
“Now, the child of an indigent family should not be deprived of what should be a right; education should not be a privilege but a right.
“So when voices speak out against it, we expect your support. This is something that you should all support, embrace, and work towards its success,” Gbajabiamila added.
The President’s Chief of Staff assured students that the government is taking measures to prevent potential strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and is actively addressing issues raised by the union.
He mentioned that President Tinubu had issued several directives to resolve the strike by academic unions of universities and higher institutions.
“We may be facing another imminent ASUU strike, and we are addressing that. We are examining the issues concerning ASUU and the impending strike, and I believe we should be able to avoid that. As you mentioned earlier, we can always strive to prevent strikes like this, fortunately, we have a President who is determined to ensure that the era of strikes is over and behind us. We are hopeful of averting the strikes,” he concluded.
