The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party has suspended the national treasurer of the party, Oluchi Opara, for questioning the accountability of N3.5 billion funds belonging to the party, directed towards its chairman, Julius Abure. READ FULL ARTCLE HERE
The suspension was officially declared by the national publicity secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, during a press conference held at the party secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, February 14.
In an interview on Arise TV on Monday, February 12, Opara had called on Abure to provide clarity regarding the N3.5 billion raised from the sale of nomination forms and other fundraising activities in preparation for the 2023 general election. Opara also alleged collaboration between the Abure-led NWC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government in Edo state.
Responding to these allegations, Ifoh labeled Opara as a mole, suggesting she was being manipulated by dissidents within the party.
“Following the 2023 general election, the Labour Party faced considerable opposition from the established political order. It later became apparent that our national treasurer, Ms. Oluchi Opara, a prominent member of the executive, was collaborating with expelled party leaders and acting against the party’s interests.
Convinced that Opara aimed to undermine our party’s integrity, the NWC convened an emergency meeting on February 13. Subsequently, a disciplinary committee was formed to investigate Opara for damaging the party’s reputation.
In adherence to our constitutional obligations to offer a fair hearing, the NWC extended an invitation to Opara to appear before the committee on February 14 at 10 a.m. Unfortunately, Opara declined to attend the hearing, disregarding the committee’s attempt to allow her to defend herself.
This refusal to cooperate constitutes an act of disrespect towards the party leadership and the millions of members who have tirelessly worked to build our party’s image.
The disciplinary committee has recommended to the National Executive Council that Ms. Oluchi Opara be suspended from the Labour Party for a minimum of six months, effective immediately.
While we regret this course of action, we urge our members to recognize it as a necessary step towards our ongoing efforts to strengthen and reform the party, in alignment with our vision for a better Nigeria,” stated Ifoh.
