Kano Correctional Centre Releases Statement Clarifying Tiktoker Murja’s Prison Disappearance

The Kano State Prison Command has refuted claims of the escape of the prominent TikToker Murja Ibrahim Kunya from one of their facilities. Authorities swiftly clarified that Murja Ibrahim Kunya was released based on the directives of a State High Court.

Kunya, along with five others, had been declared wanted by the Kano State Hisbah Board and the State Shari’a Police. She was apprehended in the Hotoro Tinshama area of the city last week following complaints from neighbors about her alleged immoral conduct, including public disturbances, attempts to influence young girls into prostitution, and the dissemination of explicit content and vulgar language on social media.

Subsequent to her arrest, she faced charges at a Sharia Court in the Gama ward of the city. The judge, Malam Nura Yusuf Ahmed, ordered her remand in prison until Tuesday, February 20, 2024, for a hearing on her bail application. Kunya, denying the charges presented by prosecutor Aliyu Abideen, was remanded in custody.

However, two days before the scheduled court date, reports surfaced suggesting her disappearance from prison, leading to speculations of a potential escape. In response, Musbahu Kofar Nasarawa, a spokesperson for the Kano Correctional Centre, clarified that Murja Kunya did not escape but was released by the court that initially remanded her.

Musbahu emphasized that the TikToker had been released on Thursday, indicating a brief two-day period in custody instead of the anticipated seven. He stated, “It was a court that brought her to us for remand, and it was the same court that ordered us to release her.
