During the 543rd inaugural lecture at the University of Ibadan, Professor Michael Ayodele Odeniyi, a renowned expert in Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy, urged the federal government to restore genuine autonomy to Nigerian universities.
Delivering his lecture titled “Whatever You Bind on Earth: New and Old Polymers in Pharmaceutical Engineering,” Odeniyi emphasized the need for academic and administrative autonomy for universities while acknowledging the importance of maintaining critical funding.
Expressing concern over recent developments, Odeniyi highlighted challenges in the curriculum development process and the assurance of student intake quality. He stressed that the academic autonomy of universities to determine the direction of their academic programs is currently under threat.
Providing data from the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Odeniyi revealed that over the last six years, Nigeria has spent over three trillion naira importing pharmaceutical products. In response to this, he suggested that the government could take measures to encourage local production, such as imposing taxes and tariffs on imported excipients.
In conclusion, Professor Odeniyi called upon the government to prioritize reinstating genuine autonomy for Nigerian universities while finding a balance with essential funding, emphasizing the importance of preserving the integrity of the academic system.
