Addressing the summit, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of fostering genuine improvement in the welfare of the people through democratic good governance. He expressed concern that the sanctions, initially intended to bring the affected nations to the negotiating table, had become counterproductive.

Highlighting ECOWAS’ core objectives of promoting security, social stability, democratic governance, and economic development in the region, President Tinubu stressed the need for unity among member states to achieve these goals.

He clarified that ECOWAS’ actions were driven solely by the desire to uphold regional ideals, without any ulterior motives or intentions to undermine the political aspirations of any member state.

Drawing inspiration from the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and Lent, President Tinubu called for compassion and goodwill towards the affected nations. He urged fellow heads of state in ECOWAS to extend a hand of friendship and solidarity to Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.

In practical terms, President Tinubu proposed the indefinite suspension of economic sanctions against the mentioned countries and their military leadership, fostering a spirit of reconciliation and cooperation within the ECOWAS community.
