The letter, received on Thursday, informed Nigerian authorities that Qatar would not be able to accommodate President Tinubu and hold the scheduled forum on March 2 and 3. It underscored the importance of a signed agreement between the two countries to facilitate investment promotion and protection.

Furthermore, Qatar’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry expressed regret that its officials had prior commitments during the period President Tinubu intended to visit. The minister would be engaged in official missions abroad, rendering him unavailable for a meeting with the Nigerian leader.

Qatar also highlighted its hosting of a concurrent “web summit,” indicating that its authorities would be preoccupied with the event. This, coupled with the unavailability of the commerce minister, posed logistical challenges for rescheduling the proposed business and investment forum.

The Qatari government’s decision not to accommodate President Tinubu’s visit at a later, more convenient time may suggest a reluctance to pursue economic alliances with Nigeria. This echoes a similar instance in 2023 when the government of the United Arab Emirates refuted claims of lifting a visa ban on Nigerians after President Tinubu’s visit to the UAE leader, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
