Man Unlawfully Arrested, Wrongly Accused As Cultist
A young graduate, Oluga Abiola, took to the social media platform X to share his experience after being wrongly labeled a cultist in various news outlets following what he claims was an “unlawful” arrest.
Abiola, a Mathematics graduate from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, recounted the incident that occurred on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2023, when he observed police officers arresting young men in his neighborhood while he was standing in front of his father’s house.
According to him, an officer falsely accused him of recording the raid on his phone while he was chatting with a friend. Consequently, he was arrested and taken to Ibarra Police Station in Ogun State, where he was unjustly branded a cultist and detained for three days without the chance for bail.
Expressing his frustration, Abiola highlighted the further injustice of having his name published as a suspected cultist in national newspapers by the Ogun Police Command’s PPRO without any proper investigation.
During his detention, Abiola claimed that the DPO of the Ibarra division threatened to make his life unbearable. He vehemently denied any involvement with a cult group, asserting that he is simply a recent graduate awaiting NYSC.
Calling attention to the alleged misconduct of the Nigerian police force in Ogun state, Abiola urged the Inspector General of Police and the governor of Ogun state to intervene, emphasizing the need for accountability for the DPO’s actions. He also sought legal representation for his family to pursue justice and requested a public apology in national newspapers to rectify the damage to his reputation.
Abiola shared that he encountered others in detention who, like him, were unjustly arrested. The incident has sparked public outrage on social media, with Nigerians condemning the police for wrongfully arresting innocent individuals and branding them as criminals.
