Anthony Okafor, an automotive engineering graduate from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, has emerged as a prominent figure in the renewable energy, solar, and auto industries. Founder of Okafor Motors, a leading auto-making factory, and solar power systems in Enugu, Okafor gained global attention in 2020 with the unveiling of his solar-electric-powered tricycle, constructed in a remarkable 21 days.

In an exclusive interview, Okafor shared insights into the genesis of his groundbreaking invention and called for support in mass-producing these innovative vehicles. The good news now unfolds as Sustainable Communities Corporation (SCC), a non-profit organization based in Ohio, USA, responds to Okafor’s call, marking a significant milestone for the Nigerian innovator.

The partnership with SCC aims to establish NrG Company (pronounced energy) and commence the mass production of solar-powered tricycles, enhancing Nigeria’s transportation system and uplifting operators from poverty. Engr Okafor expressed his excitement about this collaboration, seeing it as a boost to Nigeria’s foreign direct investment interests.

The new venture, under the trade name “Nikeke,” plans not only to produce solar-powered tricycles but also explores modifications, including quadracycles and electric bikes. SCC, through its subsidiary WinBat company, will not only provide financial support but also deploy hemp battery technology, making the solar-electric tricycles competitive with traditional gasoline-powered counterparts.

Reflecting on the four-year journey since the prototype’s launch, Okafor emphasized the challenges faced and the dedication to refining designs during this period. The partnership with SCC represents a dream come true, and Okafor is confident in launching at least two different models—a 3-seater plus driver tricycle and a 6-seater plus driver quadracycle.

Jeff Greene, a spokesperson for SCC/winBat, described the collaboration as a “Nigerian Success Story.” SCC’s involvement includes the formation of NrG Company, which will have full rights to deploy new battery technologies in Nigeria and throughout Africa, ensuring sustainability and environmental responsibility.

As SCC and Okafor Motors embark on this transformative partnership, they aim not only to produce solar-electric vehicles but also to contribute to battery and plastic recycling initiatives. The collective efforts of Okafor and SCC are poised to make a lasting impact on Nigeria’s automotive and renewable energy landscape.
