During the assembly session, Majority Leader Mr. Charity Aiguobarueghian revealed that a petition, dated March 5, 2024, and endorsed by 21 out of 24 members, had been submitted against the deputy governor. He emphasized that the number of signatories exceeded the two-thirds requirement mandated by the Constitution. The grounds for impeachment outlined in the petition were perjury and the divulgence of government secrets.

Acknowledging the receipt of the petition, House Speaker Blessing Agbebaku instructed the Clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, to deliver the impeachment notice to Shaibu and afforded the deputy governor seven days to provide a response.

The move comes amid heightened tension between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, particularly regarding the Edo governorship ticket within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In the midst of these developments, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District and the Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, has disclaimed any involvement in the alleged plot to impeach Shaibu. A statement from Oshiomhole’s Legislative Aide, Victor Oshioke, refuted social media reports linking Oshiomhole to the impeachment move, terming them as false.

The statement clarified that Oshiomhole has not engaged in discussions with Governor Obaseki concerning plans to impeach Shaibu. It emphasized Oshiomhole’s dedication to fostering goodwill between the people of Edo State and the APC, with the primary objective of winning the upcoming governorship election and steering the state towards progress under APC governance.
