In a coordinated effort on March 7, personnel from the Armed Forces, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps successfully neutralized 20 fighters associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. The operation, the second in the same Local Government this month and the third in the state, also resulted in the destruction of 50 camps, including key installations such as the IPOB’s Supreme Headquarters, Command and Control Centre, and Military Council Headquarters.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, disclosed that the joint forces faced challenges in detecting the well-concealed hideouts due to the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and strategically placed ditches along the axis to the camps. The hideouts, camouflaged by foliage, prevented easy detection during air surveillance.
During the operation, troops encountered various IEDs and ditches, which were carefully covered and detonated using excavators. The primary location targeted, identified as the supreme headquarters, command, and control center, as well as the Military Council Headquarters of IPOB/ESN, saw intense fighting resulting in the elimination of 20 terrorists. Numerous weapons were recovered, including G3 rifles, AK47 rifles, auto pump-action guns, double barrel guns, locally made pistols, and RPG bombs.
The recovered items included 226 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 216 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 172 live cartridges, 4 AK47 magazines, 3 G3 magazines, IEDs (OGBUNIGWE), POS devices, baofeng radios, mobile phones, handheld IEDs, CCTV cameras, inverters, batteries, and Biafra flags, among others.
Maj. Gen. Buba also highlighted the discovery of shallow graves across the camps, indicating ritualistic activities and implicating the IPOB fighters in ritual killings. The security forces destroyed all camps, hideouts, and shrines in the area, promising to continue pursuing the terrorists and their cohorts to dislodge them from their enclaves.
The recovered items are currently undergoing analysis for their intelligence value, while the operation underscores the commitment of the joint forces in maintaining momentum against violent extremists in the region.
