Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has provided insights into the decision to rename the Abubakar Imam International Airport after President Bola Tinubu. The governor emphasized the need for a strategic alignment of names with the essence of institutions, citing the State Polytechnic Zungeru as a more fitting tribute to the late literary icon, Abubakar Imam.
In a surprising move, the airport, initially named after Imam in June the previous year, was renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport shortly after its commissioning on Monday. The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, conveyed the announcement, quoting Bago during a live interview on TVC News at 10 on Monday.
To address concerns among Niger citizens, the governor decided to name the State Polytechnic Zungeru after Abubakar Imam, stating that it was a move to ensure a proper match of identities. Bago explained that the decision was made to acknowledge the significant contributions of the renowned Hausa author to the State and the country, particularly northern Nigeria, suggesting that academic institutions be named in honor of literary icons.
Regarding the renaming of the airport after Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the governor expressed gratitude to the President for approving the establishment of the first special Airport Agro-Processing Free Zone in Nigeria. Bago highlighted President Tinubu’s immense contributions to nation-building and the support the state has received under his leadership. The governor assured that the renaming was done after consultations with relevant stakeholders, including the State Executive Council members, and received the approval of the President.
In closing, Bago celebrated President Tinubu as an astute politician and a great leader deserving of recognition. The governor emphasized the importance of honoring those who contribute significantly to the nation’s progress and noted the widespread support received from the Tinubu-led government.
