The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) operating within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) reports significant enforcement actions carried out by its Special Task Team throughout the entirety of 2023. According to Kalu Emetu, the Head of Public Relations and Enlightenment for DRTS, a total of 1,408 motor vehicles, 3,712 commercial motorcycles, and 1,112 tricycles were impounded during this period.

Emetu further disclosed that out of the 3,712 commercial motorcycles impounded, they underwent crushing procedures, while some of the vehicles were returned to their respective owners following payment of fines and necessary repairs. The fines levied against the owners of impounded vehicles and tricycles amounted to over N127.541 million, significantly contributing to government revenues for the year.

Regarding the fate of impounded vehicles deemed unfit for road use, Emetu clarified that such vehicles were typically dismantled into scrap and handed over to their owners, ensuring they wouldn’t resurface on the roads. This measure aligns with FCT regulations prohibiting the operation of commercial motorcycles and the circulation of unworthy vehicles within the city limits.

Emetu emphasized that the forfeiture of motorcycles violating traffic regulations to the government is mandated by law.

A closer examination of the enforcement activities reveals a pattern of consistent vigilance by the DRTS throughout the year. Between January and March 2023, 217 vehicles, 836 commercial motorcycles, and 298 tricycles were impounded across the FCT. Subsequently, in the second quarter, 270 vehicles, 964 motorcycles, and 268 tricycles faced enforcement actions. The third quarter saw 482 vehicles, 931 motorcycles, and 353 tricycles impounded, while the last quarter recorded 425 vehicles, 832 commercial motorcycles, and 186 tricycles intercepted for various violations. These statistics underscore the ongoing efforts of the DRTS to uphold traffic regulations and ensure road safety within the FCT.
