Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly criticized the practice of paying pensions to former governors and their deputies, labeling it as nothing short of daylight robbery. He praised Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for taking the bold step to repeal the law supporting such pension payments.

Obasanjo expressed his views during a visit to Otti at his residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, on Friday. He commended Otti’s decision and expressed hope that other governors would follow suit.

“I saw on television the repeal of Abia pensions, and I inquired about it. You explained to me that the pension scheme for former governors here was excessively lavish,” Obasanjo remarked.

He criticized the system, pointing out that former governors were benefitting from multiple privileges while ordinary citizens’ pensions remained unpaid since 2014. Obasanjo applauded Otti for putting an end to such practices and urged other governors to emulate him.

Obasanjo also praised Otti’s resilience in overcoming challenges to become the state governor and emphasized the importance of maintaining good health for effective leadership.

“I commend you for your perseverance. Despite facing criticism and obstacles, your commitment to doing what is right is commendable. If more states followed your example, our country would see significant positive changes,” Obasanjo remarked.

He encouraged Otti to prioritize infrastructural development, noting that with proper infrastructure and leadership, the state could achieve greater progress. Obasanjo highlighted the industrious nature of the people of Abia and the Southeast region, emphasizing the need for supportive leadership to unlock their full potential.

“Investing in infrastructure and providing strong leadership will empower the people of Abia to thrive. They are inherently enterprising, and with the right support, they can contribute significantly to the state’s development,” Obasanjo concluded.
