Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has sounded the alarm on Nigeria’s impending hunger crisis if bandits and terrorists continue to obstruct farmers’ access to their fields.
Reacting to both local publications and international agencies’ warnings, Obi stressed the urgent need to address this critical issue.
In a statement, he expressed deep concern over the escalating food insecurity in Nigeria, which has tragically cost the lives of many citizens. Obi highlighted a recent report indicating a significant rise in the number of food-insecure Nigerians, reaching an alarming 100 million in the first quarter of 2024. Among them, 18.6 million face acute hunger, while 43.7 million are resorting to crisis-level or above crisis-level coping strategies.
However, Obi cautioned that the situation might be even direr than reported, citing an earlier projection by Cadre Harmonise, estimating that 31.5 million Nigerians could face acute hunger by mid-2024.
The former presidential candidate emphasized the grim reality that many Nigerians have already lost their lives due to food scarcity, portraying a level of hunger not fully captured in the media. He warned that the nation is edging closer to a state of lawlessness, where individuals, driven by desperation for survival, resort to unthinkable measures.
Obi’s remarks underscore the urgent need for decisive action to address the root causes of food insecurity in Nigeria and ensure farmers’ safety and access to their lands. Failure to act swiftly could plunge the nation into a devastating famine, with dire consequences for millions of vulnerable citizens.
