Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has reaffirmed the enforcement of approved criteria as prerequisites to qualify for the newly set retirement age of 65 years old and a length of service of 40 years for teachers in public schools across Osun.

This reaffirmation was communicated through a circular issued by Mr. Ayanleye Aina, the Head of Service for Osun State, on Tuesday in Osogbo.

The circular outlines the necessary steps for those interested in benefiting from the extended retirement age. Among the stipulations are adherence to recognized education cadre within the scheme of service, registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), confirmation of medical fitness by a qualified medical practitioner, and absence of any pending disciplinary actions.

Additionally, eligible officers are required to apply six months prior to reaching either 60 years of age or completing 35 years of service, whichever comes first. Applications must be endorsed by the respective head teacher or principal and addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.

Importantly, the circular clarifies that the extension period is not eligible for pension benefits. It further instructs the Ministry of Finance and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to halt salary payments to individuals already enjoying the extended retirement age until they fulfill all necessary conditions.

The circular explicitly states, “I wish to refer to our Circulars Ref. Nos. SMD.61/VOL.III/36 dated 31st May 2022 and SMD.61/Vol.IV/52 dated 20th October 2023 on the above subject. I reiterate that the conditions stated in the aforementioned circulars still subsist.”

It emphasizes strict adherence to the guidelines attached to the circular for any officer to benefit from the extended retirement age and length of service.

Furthermore, relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are urged to ensure widespread circulation of the circular and strict compliance with its directives.
