Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced on Tuesday that security agencies would pursue individuals possessing counterfeit university certificates within the nation.

Mamman stated that these individuals would be pursued subsequent to the submission of findings by the committee established by the Federal Government to investigate the operations of university certificate counterfeiters within the nation.

The Federal Government initiated an Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling to scrutinize the operations of certificate counterfeiters after an investigative exposé by Daily Nigerian revealed the operations of degree mills in Benin Republic.

The exposé by Daily Nigerian journalist Umar Audu disclosed how he acquired a degree within a six-week timeframe and subsequently undertook the compulsory national youth service under the National Youth Service Corps scheme upon returning to Nigeria.

As a consequence of the investigative report exposing the unlawful activities of some tertiary institutions in West African countries, the Nigerian government imposed a ban on accrediting and evaluating degrees from Benin Republic and Togo.

The committee appointed by the Federal Government was also entrusted with investigating Nigerian private universities established within the last 15 years.
