Edo Police Detain Man For Assaulting Doctor After His Wife’s Death In hospital

The Edo State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding the temporary detention of Christopher Owegie, whose wife passed away at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

In a statement issued by the State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, it was highlighted that Owegie was briefly held after physically assaulting the attending medical doctor responsible for his wife’s care prior to her demise.

According to the statement disclosed to journalists on Sunday, April 7, 2024, by the command’s spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, Commissioner Adegboye emphasized that Owegie was kept under safe custody, provided with counsel for approximately an hour, and subsequently released without conditions.

“On the 6th of April 2024, Mr. Owegie Christopher transported his wife, who was in a critical condition, to UBTH Benin for medical attention,” the statement recounted.

The woman received medical care from Dr. Osaretin Asemota, who managed to stabilize her condition initially. However, despite efforts, she succumbed to her illness while undergoing treatment and was pronounced deceased by Dr. Asemota.

The devastating news of his wife’s passing triggered an outburst from Mr. Owegie Christopher, leading to his physical assault on Dr. Osaretin Asemota. He accused the doctor of deception, alleging that he had knowingly prescribed costly medications despite knowing the inevitable outcome.

The police statement aimed to provide clarity on the events leading to Mr. Owegie’s brief detention, underscoring the need to maintain order and respect for medical professionals, even amidst the emotional turmoil of losing a loved one.
