Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s determination to demolish buildings that fail integrity tests. The warning came during the governor’s inspection of the tragic fire outbreak at Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island.

The fire, which ignited over 48 hours ago, resulted in the collapse of 14 buildings in the vicinity, with ongoing evaluations indicating the potential for further damage.

While visiting the disaster site, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed profound concern over the preventable nature of the disaster. He criticized the negligence that contributed to the prolonged fire and its devastating impact on nearby structures.

“We will dismantle any property that does not adhere to our construction rules and regulations. We cannot allow anyone to jeopardize the lives, property, and environment of others,” Governor Sanwo-Olu cautioned.

The governor condemned the conversion of residential apartments into warehouses, labeling it a risky practice that violates the state’s construction regulations.

Sanwo-Olu announced the indefinite closure of Dosunmu Market as part of the government’s response to the tragedy. However, he assured affected individuals of the state’s support in their recovery efforts.

“This fire could have been prevented,” remarked the governor.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of adhering to safety standards and regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
