Labour Party member and Abia State lawmaker, Obinna Aguocha, has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu, who has been in detention since his extradition from Kenya in June 2020, faces charges of alleged terrorism by the Federal Government. Despite a 2022 Court of Appeal order for his release on health grounds, the Federal Government’s appeal to the Supreme Court has led to Kanu remaining in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Aguocha, in a statement issued on Saturday, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to leverage his position to secure Kanu’s release. He emphasized the lack of justification for Kanu’s continued detention, particularly in light of the freedom granted to other individuals like Godwin Emefiele, Omoyele Sowore, and Sunday Igboho.
Expressing concern over potential double standards in the treatment of Kanu compared to citizens from other regions, Aguocha questioned whether there are different rules for individuals from the South East. He appealed to Tinubu to facilitate Kanu’s release as a gesture of goodwill towards peace in the South East and the welfare of the Igbo people.
Highlighting the importance of equal justice for all citizens regardless of their region or religion, Aguocha reiterated the call for Kanu’s unconditional release.
