Dispatch Rider Charged With Theft Of Gold Jewelry

A 29-year-old dispatch rider, Chigaemezu Kingsley, stood before the Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday, facing charges of stealing gold jewelry valued at N2.7 million. Naija News disclosed that Chigaemezu, residing at No. 8, Muyiwa Close, off Ajayi Road, Ikeja, Lagos, was accused of two counts of obtaining by false pretense and theft.

Insp. Courage Ekhueorohan, the Prosecutor, provided details of the alleged incident, which occurred on April 2 in the Aguda area of the Lagos Magisterial District. According to Ekhueorohan, Chigaemezu was entrusted with a parcel containing the precious jewelry, destined for delivery to a customer in Sangotedo Ajah. However, the rider purportedly vanished with the items, prompting the complainant, Bunmi Agbaje, who had engaged Chigaemezu’s services, to report the matter to the police.

The charges leveled against Chigaemezu are in violation of sections 287 (Stealing) and 314 (Obtaining by false pretenses) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised), indicating the serious nature of the alleged offenses.

During the court session, Magistrate Mrs. Sanusi Adagun granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million, with two responsible sureties required to provide a similar amount. One of the sureties must be a blood relative of the accused and must furnish evidence of three years of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until April 18 for the commencement of the substantive trial. This incident highlights the persisting challenges and risks associated with courier services in Lagos, particularly concerning valuable items.
