Outside the Manhattan courthouse where former US President Donald Trump was undergoing trial, a distressing scene transpired on Friday. Reports from Naija News detail how a man ignited himself in a park directly across from the judicial complex just as jury selection concluded in Trump’s hush money cover-up trial.

Eyewitnesses observed the man distributing pamphlets before dousing himself with an unspecified liquid and setting himself ablaze. Videos shared on social media captured the shocking moment when the flames engulfed him, leading to his collapse.

Responding swiftly, police officers and plainclothes officials attempted to extinguish the fire using fire extinguishers and their own garments. Dave, a witness aged 73, described the sudden and alarming sequence of events to AFP, noting the man’s actions before the self-immolation.

Emergency services, including ambulances, rushed to the scene, and the area around 100 Centre Street was cordoned off. The air was tainted with the smell of burning chemicals, and remnants of the man’s charred clothing littered the park.

Due to the incident, there was a delay in the high-profile trial proceedings, which resumed later than scheduled at 3 PM. While the New York Police Department confirmed the self-immolation, they have not yet disclosed a motive for the man’s actions.

This event evokes memories of a similar incident earlier in the year when a US airman set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, protesting against the war in Gaza. The man later succumbed to his injuries.

As of now, the identity of the self-immolated man and his current medical condition remain undisclosed.
