The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has initiated an inquiry into a puzzling illness emerging in Kaduna, Sokoto, and Zamfara states.According to the NCDC’s recent update, samples from affected individuals are under examination to ascertain the root cause of this unusual ailment.In Sokoto State’s Isa, Sabon Birni, and Ilella local government areas, approximately 196 cases have been reported, resulting in the unfortunate loss of seven lives.Samples have been dispatched to affiliated laboratories for further analysis. Additionally, the NCDC has dispatched a National Rapid Response Team (NRRT) to Zamfara following reports of similar cases.Residents, particularly in Kaduna State, are advised to swiftly report symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and weight loss.The agency also expressed concern over suspected heavy metal poisoning associated with mining activities, highlighting the imperative need for preventive measures like avoiding direct exposure to dust and soil, as well as enforcing safety protocols in mining operations.
