The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a strong cautionary statement to travelers regarding the inherent risks of transporting luggage without being fully aware of its contents. Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, delivered this message through a recent post on his social media account, underscoring recent incidents where unsuspecting individuals narrowly escaped legal repercussions due to this oversight.

The catalyst for this warning stemmed from a troubling incident involving two students—one pursuing a PhD and another studying abroad—who found themselves detained after bottles of codeine syrup were discovered in luggage they had agreed to carry for a female acquaintance also studying abroad.

“Recently, a PhD student and another student studying abroad were detained because bottles of codeine syrup were discovered in luggage they were transporting for a female friend overseas,” Babafemi disclosed.

He elaborated that the students were spared from potential imprisonment solely due to the intervention of the NDLEA, which facilitated the swift return of the actual owner of the luggage to Nigeria to face legal consequences.

Additionally, Babafemi cited a recent drug seizure as evidence of traffickers’ ingenuity in smuggling illegal substances.

“A recent video depicted bags of opioids concealed among spare parts originating from Onitsha en route to Mubi in Adamawa,” he noted.

“They would have faced incarceration if #ndlea_nigeria had not diligently ensured the owner was repatriated promptly… This underscores why we adamantly caution against accepting any luggage whose contents you are not fully aware of,” Babafemi emphasized.
