A woman named Hajara Yusuf was brought before Chief Magistrate Court 2 in Yola, Adamawa State on April 24, accused of pouring hot cooking oil on a man during an altercation over N100. Presided over by Magistrate Musa Alhaji Adamu, the court heard the case of grievous harm inflicted upon Adamu Abubakar allegedly over the disputed amount.
Hajara, a resident of Lakare community in Yola South LGA, Adamawa State, openly admitted to committing the act when questioned. Recognizing the seriousness of the offense and the extent of the victim’s injuries, the judge referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police command for further investigation.
The proceedings were adjourned until May 8, 2024, to allow the police to conclude their investigation and prepare for the defendant’s prosecution.
The incident occurred on April 22, 2024, when Hajara allegedly poured hot cooking oil on the victim during an argument over payment for soya bean cake he had ordered. The altercation escalated when the victim, also from Lakare, slapped Hajara while she was frying the cake. In retaliation, Hajara poured the scalding oil from her frying pan onto the victim, causing severe burns to his neck, chest, and back.
