Introduction:

The recently concluded 6th National Council on Niger Delta (NCND) in Asaba, Delta State, witnessed an array of dignitaries converging to deliberate on crucial issues concerning economic growth and development in the Niger Delta Region. Hosted by the Ministry of Niger Delta Development under the leadership of Honorable Minister Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, in collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Delta State government, the meeting served as a platform for robust discussions and strategic planning.

Key Attendees:

The gathering was graced by notable figures including the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , represented by the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, and the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma. Additionally, the host, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and Deputy Governors from various states within the Niger Delta Region were in attendance.

Also present were Chiedu Ebie, the Chairman of NDDC Board, and Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, MD of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The meeting also saw the participation of representatives from relevant Federal and State Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), Members of the National and State Assemblies, representatives of Development Partners, Traditional Rulers, Host Communities of Oil and Gas (HOSTCOM), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), BRACED Commission, and International Oil Companies (IOCs).

Theme and Proceedings:

Under the theme “Stimulating Strategies for Economic Growth and Development in the Niger Delta Region,” the meeting aimed to foster discussions and formulate actionable strategies to propel the region’s economic prosperity. Preceded by a Technical Committee Meeting, where pertinent issues were dissected, the Council emphasized the imperative of public-private partnerships (PPP) in driving development initiatives.

Highlights of Deliberations:

The Council addressed a myriad of issues outlined in the communique, including:

1 Efforts by MNDD on Agricultural Training and Empowerment Initiatives.

2 Need for increased investment in storage facilities and value chain for agricultural produce.

3 Review of the Niger Delta Region Climate Change Programme and Action Plan (NDRCCP-AP).

4 Compliance with urban and regional master plans and involvement of urban and regional planners.

5 Urgent need to reclaim degraded land and restore polluted waters.

The Council approved several resolutions, including the establishment of more rehabilitation centers, the Niger Delta Transport Infrastructure Summit, and initiatives for youth empowerment in alternative energy sources.

The Council expressed gratitude to stakeholders and the President for their commitment to the region’s development. It recognized the hospitality of Delta State and announced plans for the 7th Council Meeting in Imo State.
