The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is diligently pursuing investigations and legal actions against former officials from the Muhammadu Buhari administration who are implicated in corruption allegations. Recently, the EFCC summoned former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika to address accusations of conspiracy, abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds, and contract inflation.
Sirika stands accused of granting aviation contracts exceeding N8 billion to his brother, who is a civil servant. It is anticipated that he will face arraignment in court within the week. A reliable source within the presidency, speaking anonymously, reaffirmed the government’s steadfast commitment to eradicating corruption, stating that there will be no impunity for wrongdoers.
The source emphasized the administration’s determination to recover embezzled funds and hold accountable those responsible, regardless of their status or connections. The EFCC is actively pursuing multiple cases and will summon individuals for questioning upon concluding investigations. Some officials have reportedly opted for clandestine plea bargains, returning stolen funds to the government. However, those who reject cooperation will be prosecuted.
The source also clarified that the former President, known for his anti-corruption stance, has distanced himself from any involvement and will not intervene to shield errant officials. Notably, key figures under EFCC scrutiny from the previous administration include Hadi Sirika, former Minister of Aviation; Abubakar Malami, former Justice Minister and Attorney-General; and Sadiya Umar-Farouq, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.
