According to the most recent assessment from VisaGuide’s World Passport Index, Nigeria’s passport ranks at 191 out of 199 countries. This places it ahead of nations like North Korea, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Somalia. The ranking casts doubt on the efficacy of recent initiatives by the West African nation to enhance mobility, such as e-visa programs.
Contrastingly, the Singaporean passport claims the top spot as the world’s most powerful passport, followed closely by Italian, Spanish, French, and German passports.
Factors contributing to Nigeria’s low ranking include limitations in visa-free access, diplomatic ties, and security concerns. Other considerations encompass visa policies such as visa-free travel, electronic travel authorization, visa on arrival, e-visas, embassy or government-approved visas, passport-free travel, and restricted entry.
Moreover, the Henley Passport Index, which evaluates the number of countries accessible without a visa, consistently places the Nigerian passport among the poorest performing globally.
This persistent low ranking underscores the urgent need for Nigeria to address fundamental issues impacting the global perception of its passport.
