The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly called upon the Federal Government, via the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Power Sector operators, to swiftly reverse the recent surge in electricity tariffs within a week. Speaking in unison during a shared address in Abuja on Wednesday, commemorating the 2024 Workers’ Day, the presidents of both organizations, Joe Ajaero and Fetus Osifo, voiced their dissatisfaction with the nation’s inconsistent power supply, which they believe is impeding its economic advancement.
They stressed the profound belief that any country failing to proficiently manage its energy resources is on a path to inevitable decline.
The unions remarked, “One of the key challenges facing our nation is our evident ineptitude in effectively managing this sector for the collective benefit of our populace.”
They expressed the perspective that “Energy, irrespective of its origin, remains vital in initiating economic growth, while oil and gas are essential for ensuring robust energy capabilities in every nation.”
Highlighting the critical need for governmental collaboration with citizens to establish systems ensuring accessible energy for all Nigerians, the duo underscored that the challenges within the power sector have persisted for over a decade since its privatization.
“The reasons are glaringly evident. As long as the same individuals who sold the companies remain the purchasers, Nigerians will continue encountering significant hurdles in the power sector.
“It is unjustifiable to compel Nigerians to pay inflated tariffs for electricity that is not available. Estimated billing constitutes exploitation and blatant theft against Nigerians,” the duo declared.
