The Kano State Government has confirmed the acquisition of 41 luxury SUVs, each priced at N68 million, for the members of the State House of Assembly. Shehu Wada Sagagi, the Governor’s Chief of Staff, acknowledged that providing well-functioning vehicles to lawmakers is a legitimate right.

Sources from the Daily Post disclosed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was initially hesitant to approve the purchase of the vehicles. However, the principal officers of the Assembly persuaded him by emphasizing the necessity for new cars to aid in their duties.

The SUVs, totaling around N2.6 billion, have already been distributed to the lawmakers.

The Chief of Staff stated that considering the economic situation, the governor instructed the contractor to extend the payment schedule over time. Sagagi reiterated that the governor’s decision aligns with the respect for governmental duties and the welfare of all branches of the government and the state’s citizens.

A senior lawmaker, who chose to remain anonymous, defended the purchase, arguing that despite economic challenges, these vehicles are essential for oversight and legislative functions. He questioned why there was controversy over the purchase, noting that previous administrations had made similar acquisitions.

The acquisition has faced some public criticism, but officials have justified it as a necessary measure for effective legislative operations.
