Shehu Sani Warns NASS: Lack Of Consultation On National Anthem Change....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Former Senator Shehu Sani of Kaduna Central has emphasized the importance of extensive consultation before any alterations to the National Anthem or pledge are made by the House of Representatives. Sani expressed concern that changes made without broad consultation could be perceived as an attempt to dissolve Nigeria.
In a post on X, Sani stated: “Tampering with or changing the National Anthem or National pledge of Nigeria should be done after wider public consultation and should be factored in the process of constitutional amendments. Or would be misinterpreted as a surreptitious attempt to dissolve the country by altering one of its most important pillars.”
The House of Representatives recently passed a bill to revert to the old National Anthem, sparking debate and opposition from some lawmakers. The bill, sponsored by Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere, underwent a second reading and was swiftly passed through a third reading amidst a chaotic session.
Similarly, the Nigerian Senate held a closed session to deliberate on changing the national anthem, though the reason for the move remains undisclosed. Nevertheless, the proposed change has already drawn criticism from concerned citizens.
Bushradiogist reports that the anthem in use from independence in 1960 until 1978 was replaced by the present anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” adopted in 1978.
