House Of Representatives Introduces Shipping Bill To Tackle Arbitrary Charges

Chairman of the committee, Abdussamad Dasuki, made this revelation in Abuja recently, following a public hearing on the repeal of the Nigerian Shippers Council Act.

Dasuki emphasized that the bill would not only address arbitrary charges but also combat other illegal practices within the maritime industry.

He mentioned that the committee is currently gathering input from various stakeholders before presenting the report for the bill’s third reading in the House of Representatives.

“The feedback from today’s hearing indicates unanimous support for an economic regulator in the Nigerian maritime industry. The era of unchecked practices must come to an end,” Dasuki stated.

He expressed gratitude for the valuable insights provided by stakeholders, noting that the overdue reforms in Nigeria’s maritime sector would be diligently pursued.

Additionally, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, highlighted that the new bill, upon passage, would establish a regulatory framework for the Nigerian maritime industry.

Oyetola, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Olorunola Olufemi, affirmed the ministry’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders, including the National Assembly, to enact necessary reforms.

“We eagerly anticipate contributing to the legislative process to reform the sector for the benefit of the nation,” Oyetola asserted.

Executive Secretary/CEO of the NSC, Pius Ukeyima, assured stakeholders that their concerns would be carefully considered in the bill’s formulation.

“While addressing stakeholders’ concerns, our goal remains to bring order and growth to the sector,” Ukeyima emphasized.

The bill aims to repeal legislation that hampers the Nigerian Shippers Council’s ability to enforce presidential directives regarding economic regulation of ports.

The public hearing, attended by key proponents like Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass (represented by Sada Soli), witnessed participation from stakeholders across the shipping, freight-forwarding, and legal sectors of the maritime industry
