In a statement posted on its Facebook page on Thursday, the EFCC revealed that Adeyinka was arrested for selling N897,900 worth of naira notes, violating Section 21(4) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2007.

Following her arrest, Adeyinka was arraigned before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State. She faced one count of currency racketeering and pleaded guilty to the charge.

The statement further detailed, “Upon her guilty plea, prosecution counsel, C.C. Okezie, summoned EFCC operative Olagunju Abdul Malik to present the case facts. Abdulmalik testified that Adeyinka was apprehended on April 27, 2024, while hawking naira notes at the 10 Degree Event Centre, Billings Way, Ikeja, based on credible intelligence received by the commission.”

“At the time of her arrest, N897,900 was seized from her. She was cautioned and provided a statement,” Abdulmalik added.

After reviewing the evidence, Justice Aneke sentenced Adeyinka to six months imprisonment, with an option to pay a N50,000 fine. Additionally, the judge ordered the forfeiture of the seized N897,900 to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In a related development, the EFCC’s Maiduguri Zonal Command arrested five Bureau de Change operators on Tuesday. The suspects were apprehended at the Borno State Hajj Camp, located at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education in Maiduguri, following credible intelligence regarding their involvement in the illegal sale of foreign currencies.

According to the EFCC’s Thursday statement, “Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Command arrested five suspected illegal Bureau De Change operators in Maiduguri, Borno State on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Borno State Hajj Camp.”

The EFCC indicated that the suspects would face prosecution upon the completion of the ongoing investigation
