Checkpoint Not Liable For Enugu-Onitsha Expressway Crash, Asserts Army Report

In a statement posted on social media, the Army clarified that the accident, caused by a truck’s brake failure on a descent near the 9th Mile axis, occurred approximately 300 meters ahead of their base. The Army emphasized that their personnel were not conducting vehicle checks at the time of the incident but were responders to the aftermath. Contrary to earlier misinformation, the Army confirmed only two fatalities, debunking the higher figures reported by some media outlets.

“The Division extends its condolences to the affected families and wishes the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement read. It further underscored the persistent security challenges in the region, noting attempts by criminal elements to undermine military presence in the area.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had initially reported 25 individuals rescued from the accident scene, involving a collision of seven vehicles. FRSC’s investigation into the incident is ongoing, focusing on possible causes including excessive speeding.

The Army reiterated its commitment to its mandate of safeguarding lives and property in the region, urging the public to disregard misleading reports and rely on verified information from official channels.
