Amaechi Reveals 2015 Strategy: ‘Rigging Would Have Triggered Fire

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has recounted how his team mobilised Nigerians to resist electoral manipulation during the 2015 general elections.

Speaking at a public lecture, Amaechi said they anticipated attempts to rig the election and deliberately sent a strong message that such actions would be fiercely resisted, noting that the resolve of his team was known globally.

He also criticised widespread voter apathy, arguing that meaningful electoral reform lies in the hands of citizens rather than the government. According to him, constant claims that elections are already decided only discourage voter participation and weaken democracy.

“If you rig us out, you create serious trouble. We believed they would attempt to rig the election, so we made it clear there would be consequences, and the whole world knew,” Amaechi said.

He stressed that electoral reform would not be handed down by government, insisting that Nigerians themselves must take responsibility. He warned that voter apathy only empowers poor leadership, adding that low turnout could allow leaders to win elections with minimal support.

Amaechi urged voters to focus on competence rather than ethnic or regional sentiments when choosing leaders. He said the most important qualification for any aspiring president is the ability to positively transform the country and the resolve to protect the electoral process.

He also blamed opposition failures in past elections on poor grassroots mobilisation, recalling that his team’s extensive outreach made it difficult for rival parties to campaign in parts of northern Nigeria. According to him, the level of mobilisation ensured widespread public resistance to opposition campaigns in those areas.
