The world heavyweight champion was involved in a road crash on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State. Joshua was reportedly traveling in a Lexus SUV (registration KRD 850 HN) that collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of two people, while Joshua sustained minor injuries.

Reacting on Instagram, AY called the incident devastating, attributing it to failures in Nigeria’s road safety systems, infrastructure, and leadership. He described the tragedy as traumatizing and unacceptable, insisting that the country needs a government that values human life.

He wrote: “Today is a painful reminder of how cheaply lives are treated in Nigeria. It is heartbreaking that a Nigerian who has carried our flag proudly across the world returns home only for two of his closest associates to lose their lives on our roads. Two precious lives—friends, brothers, with families, dreams, and futures—gone. This is not fate; this is failure. Failure of infrastructure. Failure of leadership.

“How many more must die before our roads are safe? How long will we celebrate excellence abroad while exposing our own people to danger at home? This tragedy is traumatizing and unacceptable. Nigeria urgently needs accountability, safer roads, proper enforcement, effective emergency response systems, and a government that treats human life as sacred, not disposable.

“My heart goes out to Anthony Joshua. My prayers are with the families of the departed and everyone grieving this senseless loss. May their souls rest in perfect peace. Nigeria must do better. Lives depend on it.”
