The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has condemned the reported plan by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as an act of political betrayal.
Governor Yusuf is said to be preparing to leave the NNPP for the ruling APC, despite strong opposition from Kwankwaso and other senior figures within the party.
The development has reportedly sparked a major political crisis in Kano State, with several cabinet members believed to be loyal to Kwankwaso considering resignation in protest.
In a video message that circulated widely on Wednesday, Kwankwaso told his supporters that surrendering the mandate won under the Kwankwasiyya movement to the APC and former Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, amounted to a grave injustice to the people of the state.
According to him, “Handing over Kwankwasiyya’s hard-earned mandate to Ganduje and the APC is nothing less than a political betrayal and a serious sin against the people.”
Meanwhile, former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Kano State, Ja’afar Sani Bello, has downplayed Kwankwaso’s political relevance.
Speaking during the Daily Politics programme on Trust TV, Bello argued that Kwankwaso’s leadership weakens any political party he joins and claimed that the former governor lacks the national influence enjoyed by other prominent political figures.
He noted that leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) without conditions, adding that their national standing far exceeds that of Kwankwaso.
