Breaking: Former VP Osinbajo Secures Prestigious International Appointment

The announcement was made on Monday in a statement by Margaret Edwin, Director of Communication and Public Information at the agency.

According to the statement, the appointment is part of efforts to strengthen leadership capacity as the organisation pushes forward key health priorities across the continent.

Edwin noted that the move aligns with the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty Agenda, which aims to boost Africa’s voice in global health matters, increase domestic funding for healthcare, and promote local production of medical supplies.

In his new role, Osinbajo will provide strategic guidance on Africa’s participation in global health governance reforms, with a focus on sustainable healthcare financing, local manufacturing of medical products, and building strong partnerships to improve the continent’s health resilience.

He is also expected to support initiatives that enhance collaboration among African countries in addressing public health challenges.

Edwin stated that the appointment reflects Africa CDC’s commitment to engaging experienced African leaders to advance the continent’s health security, independence, and development goals.

She added that Osinbajo’s experience in governance and public policy would play a key role in strengthening healthcare systems across African Union member states, particularly in areas such as pandemic preparedness, prevention, and response.

Osinbajo, a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, served as Nigeria’s Vice-President from 2015 to 2023, where he was actively involved in major policy reforms.

Before that, he was Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, contributing to legal and institutional reforms, and later chaired Nigeria’s Economic Sustainability Committee, where he helped drive economic policies and social investment programmes.
