Breaking: Obasanjo Engineers Obi-Kwankwaso Presidential-Vice Presidential Alliance

Investigations by Sunday Punch indicate that Obi and Kwankwaso have established a joint committee to pursue a combined presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

A senior ADC official revealed that the Obi–Kwankwaso collaboration was initiated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. According to the source, Obasanjo not only endorsed Obi’s defection to the ADC but also encouraged him to partner with Kwankwaso to secure the party’s presidential and vice-presidential nominations.

Obasanjo had openly campaigned for Obi during the 2023 general election, rallying nationwide support against the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, now-President Bola Tinubu. In an open letter dated January 1, 2023, the former president stated: “None of the contestants is a saint, but when one compares their character, antecedents, understanding, knowledge, discipline and vitality they can bring to bear… Peter Obi, as a mentee, has an edge.”

Kwankwaso also shares a long-standing political relationship with Obasanjo, having served as Minister of Defence during the former president’s second term.

Within the ADC, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi remain the leading presidential aspirants, while efforts continue to formally integrate Kwankwaso into the party.

Before his defection to the ADC, Obi had pledged to serve only a single term if elected president—a promise that reportedly facilitated Kwankwaso’s willingness to accept a vice-presidential role.

Although Kwankwaso has yet to officially join the ADC, sources told Sunday Punch that the alliance is already underway, thanks to Obasanjo’s involvement.

A top ADC insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Obasanjo has been actively connecting Obi with key northern political stakeholders to strengthen the partnership. “We are aware of the alliance, though Kwankwaso is not yet formally in our party. Former President Obasanjo facilitated their connection and remains committed to the alliance. He has been engaging northern leaders to secure their support,” the source added.

Similarly, a leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement confirmed Obasanjo’s role, noting that the former president personally proposed the idea. “The former President is involved. In fact, he mooted the idea, and we are happy to be on track,” the source said.
