She made the announcement during an interview with Nigerian football icon Segun Odegbami on Eagle7 Sports 103.7FM on Saturday.

The former commissioner dismissed any plans to return to the Senate, stressing that her political ambition is now solely focused on leading Ogun State.

“Going forward, I’m not going to be a commissioner, and I won’t return to the same party either because I believe that chapter is closed,” she said. “I’m also not going back to the Senate. As the Americans would say, there’s no need. From the start, I made it clear to my associates that the only position I would come back for is the governorship.”

She added that preparations for the race are already underway and that her team is fully committed to seeing the project through.

“We have begun the journey, and we intend to pursue it seriously and with total dedication,” she said.

Obasanjo also confirmed her recent defection to the APC, explaining that her return to frontline politics was prompted by sustained pressure from supporters who believe she is best suited for the role.

“A group of people I didn’t personally assemble has been working for about two years, and about a year ago they approached me, insisting that I return and contest because they see me as the right candidate,” she explained.

Her declaration signals the start of what is expected to be a highly competitive governorship contest in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections.
