Sowore was arrested alongside Aloy Ejimakor, the special counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, and 11 other protesters during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration in Abuja last week.
The group was arraigned last Friday before Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id on charges of unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace.
In his ruling, the magistrate granted each defendant bail in the sum of ₦500,000, requiring them to present a verified National Identification Number (NIN), submit three-year tax clearance certificates, and deposit their international passports with the court.
After satisfying these conditions, Sowore and the others were released from custody on Monday.
Sowore’s arrest occurred shortly after he left the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he had attended a separate legal proceeding.
Following his detention, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that Sowore was not arrested on fresh charges but was remanded as directed by the court pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
Hundeyin stated,
“The claim that he was arrested on a fresh charge and whisked away to Kuje Prison is inaccurate. No prison will admit anyone without a valid remand warrant. Sowore was taken to prison as instructed by the court, pending when he meets his bail conditions — nothing more.”
