Buhari’s Key Question Behind Twitter Ban Finally Revealed by Lai Mohammed
Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has disclosed what former President Muhammadu Buhari asked him when the decision to suspend Twitter (now ) was taken in 2021.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Mohammed stated that Buhari inquired whether he had the capacity to execute the suspension, to which he confidently responded in the affirmative.
Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday, he dismissed claims that the ban was politically motivated, insisting that it stemmed from prolonged regulatory concerns and ongoing engagement with the platform.
“When we decided to suspend Twitter, the President, God bless his soul, asked me one question: do I have the capacity to do it? And I said yes. I also consulted with my colleague, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy. The main reason for the suspension was that Twitter was acting recklessly,” Mohammed explained.
Twitter and the Nigerian government eventually reached an agreement in 2022, leading to the platform’s restoration after a 222-day suspension.
Under the terms, Twitter agreed to establish a legal presence in Nigeria, pay taxes, appoint a local representative, and cooperate with the government on content regulation.
While some conditions took time to be fully implemented, the government has emphasized that these measures were intended to safeguard national interests, not to stifle free expression.
