Delta Police Break Silence, Deny Death In Custody At Ekpan Station

In a statement released on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the Command said the allegation was baseless and intended to undermine ongoing efforts to combat crime in the state.

The police were responding to a social media post by a self-proclaimed activist, Israel Joe, which claimed that an ill suspect had died in custody and called for protests as well as the redeployment of a senior police officer. The Command, however, firmly denied the allegation, stating that no death occurred in its custody.

According to the statement, the report is entirely unfounded and aimed at discrediting the Command’s work in reducing crime. The police clarified that the claim originated from a recent coordinated operation carried out across parts of the state.

The operation, conducted on March 25 and 26, 2026, and led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, targeted criminal hideouts in Ughelli and Warri. During the exercise, over 270 suspects were arrested, including suspected drug traffickers and cultists, with a large quantity of illicit drugs also recovered.

The Command added that all arrested individuals were properly screened, with those found not culpable released, while others remain in custody in stable condition.

It warned that the spread of false information could mislead the public and damage trust in law enforcement, adding that those responsible for circulating such claims would be investigated and prosecuted.

Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the police urged residents to disregard the viral report and rely only on official channels for accurate information.
