Since his appointment, the EFCC has made notable progress in combating corruption, according to spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren. Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast show, The Morning Brief, Uwujaren highlighted the impressive recovery and conviction figures achieved during Olukoyede’s first year in office.
“In terms of financial recovery, we have secured over ₦200 billion within a year. This doesn’t include recoveries in dollars and euros, which are also substantial. Regarding convictions, we have achieved over 3,000 in this period, which is significant,” Uwujaren stated.
Despite these accomplishments, Uwujaren emphasized that the EFCC’s primary goal is to prevent crime rather than solely focusing on securing convictions. He pointed out that around 70% of the convictions were related to cybercrime, with a significant number involving young individuals.
“Our emphasis is not just on conviction statistics; our focus is on preventing corruption. Of the convictions I mentioned, 70% are linked to cybercrime cases,” he explained.
The EFCC has initiated various programs, including awareness campaigns aimed at educating young Nigerians about the risks of fraud, especially cybercrime. Uwujaren also highlighted public sector corruption as a significant issue, particularly regarding contract and procurement processes.
He reaffirmed the EFCC’s commitment to tackling these problems before they escalate into larger fraud cases. “Corruption in the public sector often stems from contract and procurement issues, and the commission is dedicated to preventing these practices before they occur. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure; stopping procurement fraud early can save the country substantial resources,” Uwujaren concluded.
