The 22-year-old made his competitive debut for the Dutch national team on Friday during a World Cup qualifier against Poland in Warsaw, coming on for Memphis Depay in the 87th minute. That appearance officially cap-ties him to the Netherlands, ending any possibility of playing for Nigeria.
Born in the Netherlands to a Togolese father and Nigerian mother, Emegha had previously been approached by the Nigeria Football Federation with an offer to switch allegiance. However, he insisted that his loyalty firmly lies with the Netherlands.
“The Netherlands is simply my country. I’m a proud Dutchman and always will be. Even if I weren’t called up, I would still be Dutch,” he told Sportnieuws.
Emegha is reportedly preparing for a high-profile move to Chelsea at the end of the season, but his immediate focus remains on excelling with the Dutch national team.
“I’m going to work towards the World Cup all season. I’ll do anything for that: score more goals, provide more assists, and be in peak physical condition. I’ve had a lot of injuries this season; I want to be in top shape,” he said.
