The African Democratic Congress (ADC) leader visited Jonathan at his Abuja residence and shared photos of the meeting on social media, describing it as:
“A pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”
The meeting sparked political speculation, as the purpose was not immediately disclosed.
However, Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, clarified to Daily Trust that the visit was entirely non-political. He explained that Atiku went to check on Jonathan after the tense situation the latter faced in Guinea-Bissau during the recent presidential election.
“The former Vice President visited former President Jonathan because of what happened while he was in Guinea-Bissau. They hadn’t met since, and he felt it was important to check on him. There is nothing political about the meeting,” Ibe said.
Jonathan’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, also confirmed he was not privy to the details of their discussion.
Jonathan was among the African leaders caught in Guinea-Bissau on November 26 following a coup. He had been part of a joint AU, ECOWAS, and West African Elders Forum mission deployed to monitor the presidential election.
